Most young engineers and hobbyist starts our on a new project with blank slate not knowing how to get to where they want to be and I've been there myself. I would start out trying to read as many manuals, papers and websites trying to figure out how to get started on my project and if you don't have a mentor to guide you it can be really difficult.
